I hadn't really noticed, but the numbers got my attention. Last year I planted 2.5kg of seed and saw a 460% return on that investment. This year I planted that same quantity and reaped a 776% return. The bulbs were not as spectacularly large like they were last year, but there sure was a lot of them. Here's to another hot dry summer next year. The produce, encore, is more than just the eggs. The green onions are viscous, akin to when one cuts into an aloe vera plant. The contrast between what many people eat and these exotic choices is remarkable. The yolks are like paint and neither the eggs nor the onions closely resemble what I find in our grocery store. What luxuries these gifts are. It seems that anything past the labour day long weekend is a bonus.  The grass is slowing down and the meat birds are looking very edible.Some other small stock owners have commented that the birds have struggled with some respiratory ailment and some of ours have some raspy breathing too. What a tight ship it must be to have orchids blooming year round in Manitoba.  Everything seemed to be very controlled.  The lighting was provided by 500w compact florescent bulbs.  The walls and ceiling were decked out in flat white; no doubt to provide excellent reflection for the artificial light. What a typical early spring day on the prairie. Two dozen in two days from our small flock are wonderful results given that it's mid winter and the light is thin these days. I learnt some things along the way so expect to have some outstanding hatch rates this spring.  I love the feed they are on just now. Does anyone know what it is designed to bake?  I've been lusting after some madeleine pans, but that's not what these are I don't think.
